Downloading Modules
Instructions
(Windows 95 or greater)

These Instructions are for those that already have the Data Base Program on their computer and wish to Replace or Add Modules by downloading the Installer Module on their C-Drive

Replacing Modules

Note: Please Read

1. If you have not entered any data or DO NOT wish to keep the data you have already entered into the Module you want to replace, go to Step #4

2. If you are downloading the Main Menu, you do not have to change it's name as described in Step #3. Just go to Step #4. Also, there is no serial # for this Module.

3. If you are downloading a "New" module, you do not have to change it's name as described in Step #3. Just go to Step #4. A "New" Module is a Trial Version Module that was not available and you are adding it to the program for the 1st time.

If you are not sure or have any questions, please write to Simp_List@earthlink.net. Please note that between the words Simp and List there is an "Underscore ( _ )" and not a "Dash ( - )".

However, to transfer data you have entered on the present version (the one that's on your computer now) to the "Newer" version, please follow the instructions (Step #1) below before you download the newer version. If you don't, you could lose all your data.

Step 1

The 1st thing you're going to do is locate the folder named Decorative Painter DB which should be located on the C-Drive.

  • 2X click on "My Computer"
  • 2X click on C-Drive
  • Look for folder named Decorative Painter DB

If you FIND the Decorative Painter DB folder, go to Step #3. If you CAN'T find the Decorative Painter DB folder, go to Step #2

Step 2

This step will help you locate the Decorative Painter DB folder

  • Click on "Start"
  • Select "Find"
  • Select "Files or Folders
  • In the Name Box, type "Decorative Painter DB" without the quotes ( " )
  • Click on "Find Now"
  • Write down where the folder is located
  • Go to that location and MOVE the Decorative Painter DB folder onto the C-Drive
  • Go to Step #3

Step 3

Before downloading a newer module version.....

  • Open the Decorative Painter DB folder
  • Locate the modules that you are going to download and rename them with the word "Old" in it - such as, "Book" will be renamed as "OldBook", etc. Module names are: Main, Book, Maga, Arti, Stud, Clas, Proj, Pack, Sale, Cons, Pain, and Inve. Note: You DO NOT have to rename Modules that do not have data in them or Modules that you are not upgrading.

The purpose of this is so that you can easily identify the old from the new module when you are ready to transfer your data. And, more importantly, so that you don't replace the older module with the newer one before importing your data....causing all your data to go poof...into never, never land!

Step 4

Now all you have to do now is download the module. Go to my web site (http://www.simp-list.com/). Look on the left side of the page and locate Modules and click on Updated Modules or New Modules. Here you will have a chance to review which Modules have been updated or added. When you're ready to download, just click on that Module. What you will be really downloading is an Installation program named SetupXX....where XX represents the Module being downloaded. The downloading process will place the SetupXX Installer program on your C-Drive in a folder named Decorative Painter DB.....C:\Decorative Painter DB. Downloading the Installer will only take a few minutes.

Note: Module = XX names are: Main=Mn, Book=Bk, Maga=Mg, Arti=At, Stud=St, Clas=Cl, Proj=Pj, Pack=Pk, Sale=Sa, Cons=Co, Pain=Pn, and Inve=In.

Example: Book Module = SetupBk, Magazine Module = SetupMg, etc.

OK....let's start.

To download the latest Module, just click on the Module of choice.

If you are using MS Internet Explorer you will see a dialog box asking you "What would you like to do with this file?". Select "Save it to disk" (Disk really means Hard Drive) and click OK. Netscape users will not see this dialog box.

A Save as dialog box will appear. And....

  • below the word Save as, it should say, Save in: C:\Decorative Painter DB.
  • If not, highlight what's in the box and type in C:\Decorative Painter DB

Now C:\Decorative Painter DB should be displayed in the Save in: box.

In the lower portion of the dialog box it will say File name: SetupXX

Below that, it will also say Save as type: All files (*.*)

Now you're ready to start the download process. Click on the Save button located in the lower right portion of the dialog box.

This is a good place to take a quick stretch break......You're almost there.

Attention Windows XP Users:
After you have downloaded the Installer Program (SetupXX) onto your hard drive, do the following before Installing the program:
1. Right Click on the SetupXX
2. Select "Properties"
3. Select "Compatibility Tab"
4. Click on box next to "run this program in Compatibility for"
5. Select "Windows 98/ME"
6. Click on "Apply"
7. Click on "OK"

When downloading has completed, look for the Decorative Painter DB folder on your C-Drive. Inside, you should see the Installer icon, named SetupXX .

  • 2X click on the icon named SetupXX to start installation process.

When you get to the part about where it should install the program, it will want to install the Module into the Decorative Painter DB folder. Continue with the installation until you're finished. This will just take a few minutes.

Open the Decorative Painter DB folder. In the Decorative Painter DB folder you should see the new Module you installed. You should also see the older module in the same folder.

Note: To save the Installer Program onto a 1.44 MB HD Diskette, click and hold on the Installer icon with the right mouse button and drag the icon over the A-Drive until it highlights the A-Drive. Release the mouse button and select "Move Here" when the dialog box appears.

Step 5

Importing data into the newly downloaded module

After starting the new program, you will need to reenter your module serial #. When you are at the Data Entry Form, click on the "?" icon located in the upper left part of the screen. Click on the Import Data button and follow the instructions for importing data. When you are ready to transfer your data, go back to the Data Entry Form and click on the Import button located in the lower right portion of your screen.

One more thing. The descriptions "you" entered into the Value (drop-down) List will need to be reentered. Since they are your descriptions, there is no way for it to be transferred.

That's it! Now go get yourself a well deserved drink (you choose the type of liquid that suits you...LOL) and enjoy the program. On 2nd thought.....do it after you read the next paragraph.

When you are satisfied that you have transferred ALL your data successfully into the newer module, you should trash the old module which you have rename (example: OLD Book, etc.).
